A Short Guide to Donnybrook’s Thriving Wine Industry

Donnybrook is the centre of apple production in Western Australia. Aside from this, Donnybrook is part of the Geographe wine region, which is famous throughout the country. The Australian wine industry is so diverse, with plenty of vineyards across the country. Australian wines as a whole have created a reputation of quality with a refreshing flavour.

Donnybrook is warm for most of the year, with temperatures in the 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit range from November to March. The precipitation is relatively heavy during May to September. The Mediterranean climate, coupled with rolling hills, is perfect for apple orchards and vineyards.

Donnybrook real estate, like the rest of Western Australia, has a tendency towards rural life. Grapes, apples and olives are produced locally, setting the bar for rural produce.

Although there are more famous wine regions in Australia, Donnybrook presents a mini-climate that sustains grape growing. The resulting wines are varied and present a remarkable harvest comparable to other Australian wines.

The area that was to become Barton Jones was first planted with grapes in 1978. It became Barton Jones after Jackie Barton and Adrian Jones bought the property in 1999. The winery first bottled its own name brand in 2002. The following year, it released the Blackboy Ridge wine label. In 2007, it released its first wines in the Premium series. This was followed up in 2013 with the introduction of the Cellar series.

Currently, the Premium series has a 2013 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, a 2016 Semillon, a 2015 Shiraz and a 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cellar series has a 2015 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, 2016 Rose, 2012 Red and a 2016 Cabernet Shiraz.

Thomson Brook Wines

A small family-owned vineyard, Thomson Brook offers a variety of wines and fortified wines. These include good-quality white wines like late harvest Riesling, late harvest Semillon, Verdhelo and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. The reds include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Tempranillo.

The Donnybrook area is a young wine-growing area within the Geographe region. This is an up and coming region, with the first grapes planted during the 1970s. Up to the 1990s, the vineyards in the region supplied other winemakers with their grape harvest instead of creating their own. Since the introduction of own-brand wines, the region has seen a surge of popularity for their wines’ high quality.
